{"id":2314,"date":"2021-04-09T15:06:39","date_gmt":"2021-04-09T19:06:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crfc-fcrc.ca\/?page_id=2314"},"modified":"2026-03-18T08:50:05","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T12:50:05","slug":"local-journalism-initiative","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/crfc-fcrc.ca\/en\/local-journalism-initiative\/","title":{"rendered":"Local Journalism Initiative"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221; el_class=&#8221;radiometre-1&#8243; z_index=&#8221;&#8221;][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h1>ABOUT THE LOCAL JOURNALISM INITIATIVE<\/h1>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Local Journalism Initiative (LJI) supports the creation of original civic journalism that covers the diverse needs of <\/span><b>underserved<\/b> <b>communities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across Canada, including the needs of <\/span><b>underrepresented groups.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Funding is available to eligible Canadian media organizations to hire journalists or pay freelance journalists to produce <b>civic journalism<\/b> for <b>underserved communities.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The LJI is complemented by the <a href=\"https:\/\/crfc-fcrc.ca\/en\/changing-narratives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Changing Narratives Fund &#8211; LJI Stream<\/a>.[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=&#8221;normal&#8221;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To protect the independence of the press, three (3) not-for-profit organizations deliver the Initiative, jointly representing the different segments of the news industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>Community Media Coalition, represented by the<br \/>\n<\/b><b>Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC)<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>News Media Canada<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Consortium of Official Language<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Minority Community Media<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator type=&#8221;normal&#8221;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]News Media Canada and the Community Media Coalition, represented by the Community Radio Fund of Canada, are pleased to be working together to deliver a harmonized and consistent LJI program across multiple media sectors.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applications for the 2025-2027 program are now open via <a href=\"https:\/\/mycrfc-monfcrc.smapply.io\/prog\/lji-ijl\/\">the online application portal.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Consortium of Official Language Minority Community Media has delivered a separate LJI program for their supported media sectors. You can learn more on <a href=\"https:\/\/ijl-lji.olconsortiumlo.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">their website<\/a>.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_separator type=&#8221;normal&#8221;][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Strategic Advisory Committee<\/strong><br \/>\nThe Strategic Advisory Committee serves as a primary consultative body for the Community Media Coalition, represented by the Community Radio Fund of Canada, in the delivery of the Local Journalism Initiative (LJI) and Changing Narratives Fund (CNF) stream. This consultation ensures that the diverse perspectives and specific needs of the target communities served by the LJI and CNF are prioritized and integrated at every stage of program delivery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Composed of experienced media and communications professionals as well as academics, the committee provides expert consultation to align initiatives with the unique realities of Indigenous (First Nations, M\u00e9tis, Inuit), Black, racialized, ethnocultural, official language minority, and ethnoreligious communities, as well as persons with disabilities and 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.
