Local Journalism Initiative to increase\u00a0local news production<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ottawa, November 5, 2019<\/strong> – The Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC) has launched the Local\u00a0Journalism Initiative to increase the production of local civic news by community and campus radio\u00a0stations and type B Indigenous radio stations serving areas where local news is poor or simply\u00a0unavailable. This project is funded by the Government of Canada.<\/p>\n

The Initiative\u2019s objective is to enable more communities served by these stations to gain access to local\u00a0news by increasing their capacity to produce and broadcast such news. A grant in the amount of $ 2\u00a0million from the Government of Canada will allow the implementation of this initiative. The selected\u00a0projects will roll-out early 2020 and will continue until March 31, 2021.<\/p>\n

Promoting local news<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Local Journalism Initiative will not only allow selected communities to recognize themselves in\u00a0their local media but will also make the production of local journalism available to all media in the\u00a0country.<\/p>\n

“This initiative includes a distribution system sharing news produced by funded radio stations with\u00a0media across the country. It\u2019s important to ensure we are reporting on, and making available to the\u00a0public, the realities happening in different parts of the country, ” explains Emmanuel Sayer, Programs\u00a0Manager of the CRFC.<\/p>\n

Selected radio stations could receive up to $ 50,000 to cover the salary of a journalist or a freelance\u00a0journalist.<\/p>\n

The CRFC will work in collaboration with the Alliance des radios communautaires du Canada<\/a>,\u00a0l\u2019Association des radiodiffuseurs communautaires du Qu\u00e9bec<\/a> and the National Campus and Community\u00a0Radio Association to ensure the success of the Local Journalism Initiative and the broadcasting\u00a0of news produced by grant recipients.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn an era of globalization, it is crucial to ensure that more Canadian communities are able to see each\u00a0other and be visible in the media\u201d says Brenda Grunau, president of the CRFC. “We thank\u00a0the Government of Canada for this initial investment and will continue to look for resources to grow\u00a0local news production across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
