Scheduled to debut in early 2024, this groundbreaking project will amplify the voices of Indigenous language speakers, artists, and culture keepers through the power of radio.<\/p>\n<p>Led\u00a0by\u00a0award-winning\u00a0producer and\u00a0SiriusXM\u00a0host, Kim\u00a0Wheeler\u00a0(Anishinaabe, Mohawk) the project will include the production of five series of six episodes each and will weave together conversations with Indigenous language keepers, community stories, and feature music by Indigenous artists. The team creating this original content will be made up exclusively of Indigenous producers, hosts, and knowledge keepers.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0heart of\u00a0<i>Words\u00a0and\u00a0Culture\u00a0<\/i>lies in\u00a0its\u00a0commitment\u00a0to\u00a0learn, celebrate,\u00a0and\u00a0connect. Each\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0five\u00a0series will delve into distinct Indigenous language families \u2013 Iroquoian, Athabaskan, Anishinaabemowin (Ojibway), Inuktitut, and Cree. Hosted by learners and speakers of the language, the series will bring together conversations and culture aimed at setting new standards in radio broadcasting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The hosts I have chosen almost all come from a broadcasting background and from the nation of the language they will be presenting. I&#8217;m thrilled to be working with powerful women like\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">January Rogers<\/span>\u00a0(Six Nations of the Grand\u00a0River), and\u00a0Christine\u00a0Genier (T\u00e1\u00e4n\u00a0Kw\u00e1ch&#8217;\u00e4n Council),&#8221;\u00a0said\u00a0Wheeler\u00a0about the\u00a0influential\u00a0team\u00a0who\u00a0will\u00a0be building this project together.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Globalization certainly has had an impact on Indigenous cultures around the world and there is a wide-ranging desire for access to Indigenous languages, with the biggest challenge being access to those who hold the knowledge,&#8221; said CRFC Executive Director,\u00a0<span class=\"xn-person\">Alex Freedman<\/span>. &#8220;Through our partnership with SiriusXM Canada, this programming will be available to anyone who wants to listen to and learn about Indigenous languages in\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"xn-person\">Michelle Mearns<\/span>, VP, Programming and Operations, expresses pride in the collaboration stating, &#8220;We are proud to partner with the CRFC to bring this incredibly important initiative to life and shine a spotlight on preserving and celebrating Indigenous languages,&#8221; said Michelle\u00a0Mearns,\u00a0VP,\u00a0Programming\u00a0&amp;\u00a0Operations,\u00a0SiriusXM Canada.\u00a0&#8220;It\u00a0is essential to us to provide a platform and support for Indigenous content through our many partnerships, sponsorships and North American-wide channel\u00a0<i>The Indigiverse<\/i>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<i>Words and Culture\u00a0<\/i>program will be offered for broadcast (at no cost) to all Indigenous, community, and campus-licensed radio stations in\u00a0<span class=\"xn-location\">Canada<\/span>. It will also air on SiriusXM&#8217;s\u00a0<i>The Indigiverse\u00a0<\/i>(ch.165 and on the SiriusXM app) and be made available to schools, Indigenous language immersion programs, and other educational services across the country.
