Community Radio Fund of Canada welcomes new Executive Director
Ottawa — The Board of Directors of The Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC) is pleased to announce that Alex Freedman took on the position of Executive Director as of March 23, 2020.
“We are very pleased that Mr. Freedman has accepted the position, and we look forward to the direction and commitment he will provide the organization,¨ said Brenda Grunau, Chair of the CRFC Board of Directors. “We have conducted a thorough and intensive candidate search and are really pleased that Alex is able to join the organization.”
Alex Freedman comes to the CRFC with many years of executive management experience related to broadcast journalism, national non-profit organizations, and post-secondary education institutions. He also brings several years of frontline work as a journalist and senior producer to his new position.
Most recently Mr. Freedman was Deputy Chief of Staff to the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations in Ottawa. Previously, Mr. Freedman was Chief of Staff to the President of Laurentian University located in Sudbury, Ontario. From 2005 to 2013, he worked firstly as an investigative reporter for The National and for CBC Winnipeg, and later as Senior Producer and Bureau Chief for the CBC in Québec City.
“I am very pleased to join the CRFC, and look forward to advancing the important contribution made by the fund to community radio stations right across Canada,” said Mr. Freedman. “In times of crisis, community radio provides critical information and local connection for underserved communities, and support for local journalism is needed more than ever. ”
The Board of the CRFC would also like to thank and wish the best in the future to Amély Friolet-O’Neil who served as Executive Director for three years.

The CRFC is unique in that it is the only organization financially mandated to support community and campus radio stations across Canada through suitable and flexible funding programs to meet the needs of the sector.
