Job Description: Bilingual National Editor
About the position: We are looking for a Bilingual National Editor who can support campus, community, and Indigenous radio journalists funded through the Local Journalism Initiative while fulfilling the editorial direction for both Frequency and Fréquence (national distribution platform for LJI-funded content). The Bilingual National Editor will join our editorial team and report to team members at the CRFC.
Hours: 35 per week
Location: Remote, but candidates must be legally permitted to work in Canada
Contract length: Until March 31, 2025, with the possibility of renewal
About the Community Radio Fund of Canada: The Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC) seeks and secures resources to fuel the production, distribution, and sustainability of Canada’s community audio broadcasters through dynamic funding programs.
The CRFC advocates for and supports the contribution of community audio broadcasters to the media sector in Canada, reflecting the diversity of their listeners, promoting independent, local content, and building their capacity to connect and inform their communities.
About the Local Journalism Initiative: The Local Journalism Initiative (LJI) is funded by the Government of Canada and supports the creation of original local journalism that covers the diverse needs of underserved communities across Canada (i.e. regions and communities with little or no access to local news and public interest information). It is an opportunity for stations who would otherwise not have the means to hire a journalist to be able to create news content that is relevant to the communities that the station serves.
National Editors are responsible for overseeing the journalistic content created by journalists who have been employed by campus, community, and Indigenous radio stations funded through the Local Journalism Initiative. This journalistic content is shared via the national distribution platform, Frequency (Fréquence for Francophone news).
The National Editors will use their skills in journalism and management, reflecting an understanding of historical, current, and future trends in the field, the needs of the public, as well as the management techniques and skills needed to apply that knowledge to assist journalists across Canada.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Providing editorial support for LJI journalists, which includes mentoring, coaching, training, and other forms of assistance
- Provide journalistic guidelines and other resources and materials that assist LJI journalists
- Provide feedback and direction on story pitches, script drafts, web copy, and radio stories from LJI journalists
- Vetting and publishing journalistic content, both written and audio, on Frequency and Fréquence to ensure it upholds Journalistic Standards and Principles
- Working to improve Frequency and Fréquence by communicating work requests and functionality issues with the CRFC team
- Supporting radio stations with the hiring of LJI journalists
- Participate in orientation and information session(s) with recipient stations
- Monitor and evaluate the progress and performance of LJI journalists
- Promoting the content on Frequency and Fréquence via social media
- Communicating regularly with CRFC team
- Other tasks as necessary
Experience:
- Minimum 3 years experience as a journalist
- Minimum 3 years experience working in radio and audio journalism
- Strong proficiency in audio production hardware and software; familiarity with Digital Audio Workstations, transcription software, radio journalism norms and best practices
- Proven record of creating effective content for specific audiences and meeting deadlines
- Experience with WordPress
- Experience with photo editing is an asset
- Knowledge and/or familiarity with the campus-community radio sector is an asset
- Experience training and mentoring emerging journalists is an asset
- A degree or diploma in radio broadcasting and/or journalism from a post-secondary institution is an asset
- Experience with social media coordination
- Experience working in a team environment

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in French and English (mandatory bilingualism);
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, teamwork, problem-solving, and analytical skills; high attention to detail
- Mentorship and coaching skills; proven ability to work with people from diverse skillsets
- Excellent judgment, time and priority management, organizational and leadership skills
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Creativity and the ability to develop and edit audio content
- Knowledgeable, experienced, and capable of building relationships with diverse communities underrepresented in the broadcasting industry
Salary and benefits:
The salary range for this position is $55,000-$70,000 commensurate with experience
Two weeks vacation in addition to two weeks in December when the CRFC head office is closed for the holiday break
