Empowerment and Community Development - The Continued expansion of CHHA’s News Department & Local News Production

Radio Voces Latinas (CHHA-FM), a Spanish-language community radio station in North York, Ontario, set out to empower their community by inviting young Latin American professionals to participate in the development of their local news department. Recent graduates were recruited in mentored in the hopes that the experience and skills acquired while working in local news production would set them on a path for successful careers in media.

“We wanted to continue to unify the Latin American community and keep them informed about issues around Toronto and beyond, with the added benefits and pride of knowing the news were produced by a professional news team and aired in Spanish”, says the station’s President Linda McGlade of the project.
