We recognize the importance of a strong government and look forward to seeing your team’s work unfold. The recent investments in CBC/Radio-Canada are a welcome step towards supporting democracy in Canada.
However, we believe this crucial support for local news and information cannot stop there. To truly strengthen our communities and ensure diverse voices are heard, we strongly urge your government to invest in the campus, community, and Indigenous broadcasting sector through the Community Radio Initiative. Campus, community, and Indigenous radio stations represent some of the last remaining truly local broadcasters in Canada. Your government’s commitment to local news will be significantly strengthened by ensuring these deeply rooted community pillars receive the support they need. These are the stations that have always been, and continue to be, at the core of the communities they serve.
Investing solely in CBC/Radio-Canada will not be enough to address the full spectrum of local news needs across Canada. A comprehensive approach requires supporting the entire local news landscape.
